SIGA The Goldsmiths’ Company 2017 Studio Internship Graduate Award         About the Award A Goldsmiths’ Company award open to two graduates (within 5 years of graduation) to support the next generation of silversmiths. The award offers the opportunity to train with the country’s leading silversmiths for 16 weeks (which can be undertaken on a part time basis) before creating an exhibition of work at the Goldsmiths’ Centre. On completion, a certificate will be awarded at a special ceremony at Goldsmiths’ Hall. Funding for Each Graduate Includes A maintenance living grant of £210 per week for a total of 16 weeks.

Celebrated filmmaker  Ujin  Lin has created a video installation for Goldsmiths’ Fair 2017. His film 'Precious Mysteries' features jewellery and silver he selected from this year’s Fair exhibitors. Ujin  has previously made video campaigns for brands such as Prada, Philip Lim and Zara. Ujin was inspired by the interiors of Goldsmiths’ Hall to create his video, and to celebrate the beauty and craftsmanship of work by Goldsmiths’ Fair exhibitors. Robert began his career at the Goldsmiths’ Company in 2000 as Superintendent Assayer of the London Assay Office, before taking over as Deputy Warden (Managing Director-equivalent) in 2006. New Designers, a platform promoting new creative talent from graduates, has announced the 2020 recipients of the Goldsmiths’ Company awards for jewellery and silversmithing. The winners are jeweller Coco Liang from Birmingham City University and silversmith Yitong Shang from the Glasgow School of Art. This year, the competition was held digitally with students encouraged to submit design ideas online. A survey with 120 respondents carried out by  The Goldsmiths’ Craft & Design Council  has found that Covid-19 is adversely impacting designer-makers across the UK, driving it to announce a series of new initiatives to support, connect and inspire isolated craftspeople during this time. A gift from the Goldsmiths’ Company Charity to support three new PhD studentships at Cambridge will advance research in precious metals and help develop new technical expertise. Last week, the Goldsmiths’ Company delivered the first Jewellery Materials Congress. The event, which included a showcase exhibition, evening awards reception and awards conferment, was a culmination of months of planning, nearly 150 entries to the competition and a glittering array of prizes. The Fashion Awards 2016 Trophy Designed By Marc Newson For Swarovski

The British Fashion Council (BFC) and Swarovski have commissioned Marc Newson to create a bespoke crystal trophy for The Fashion Awards 2016 in partnership with Swarovski which will take place at the Royal Albert Hall on Monday 5th December. Created with the resources and technical ability of Swarovski and crafted from Swarovski Crystal, the hexagonal design draws inspiration from crystal clusters and rock structures. The trophies are all handcrafted at Swarovski’s headquarters in Wattens, Austria and will complete an 800 mile journey from there to the Royal Albert Hall in London. Each trophy measure 245mm in height by 67mm wide.

John Donald, one of the fathers of Contemporary Jewellery died aged 94 on Thursday 21st September, after a short illness.  His contribution to jewellery design cannot be underestimated, from his mentoring of generations of apprentices to his innovative techniques and designs; some of which can be seen in the work of some jewellers at this week's Goldsmiths' Fair. Loewe Reveals Craft Prize Trophy

The newly established Loewe Foundation Craft Prize launched earlier this year with the aim to recognize emerging artisans, has announced the creation of the award’s winner’s trophy.  Designed and made by Alex Brogden, it was engraved by Graham Saggers at the Goldsmiths Centre. Miniaturist Vicki Ambrey Smith creates commission steeped in rich history

Vicki Ambrey Smith, the renowned miniaturist silversmith, has revealed her latest commissioned piece to Benchpeg. The extraordinary commission came about through her last showing at Goldsmiths' Fair last autumn, where she met a client who is a collector of very rare books. The client owns a particularly rare volume, which was written in Amsterdam in 1650 by Menasseh Ben Israel.  The text is part of petition written to Oliver Cromwell seeking readmission for the Jews to return to England. Eileen Gatt Transforms Former Black Isle Post Office Into Ethical Jewellery Centre

The small village of Munlochy, on the Black Isle, is set to be at the forefront of Scotland’s drive to become a world leader in ethical jewellery making and silversmithing. Eileen Gatt has recently given up her Edinburgh studio in order to transform the former post office, a few miles from Inverness, into a centre for ethical making and design. It’ll be a lengthy task, but thanks to a £4,000 bursary from the Incorporation of Goldsmiths of Edinburgh, plus £11,000 from Creative Scotland and £30,000 from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), it’s a project she thinks has a bright future.

Appointment: Michael Prideaux elected as Prime Warden for 2018-19

Fresh calls for vigilance after spike in high end smash and grab robberies

The recent spate of violent 'smash and grab' moped robberies on leading British jewellers will increase in the run up to Christmas, a leading security expert has warned and retailers are urged to contact police with reports of any suspicious activity. Robberies have taken place across the country with premium watches, primarily Rolex, targeted by gangs of youths. Harriet Kelsall Bespoke Jewellery has won the ‘Independent Retailer of the Year’ gong at the Cambridge News Business Excellence Awards 2017.
